As a photographer, traveling New Zealand's South Island by car was the only way to go.  This moody scene was unfolding before my eyes.  I pulled over and set up quickly to get the capture.  The light was so perfect, illuminating the ridge, the lake and the budding foliage in the foreground just right.  There are a couple of purple sunbursts captured at the ridge that only add to the mystery of this moody landscape.  A long exposure smooths out the clouds and the water. Truly a one of a kind capture.

A winter’s morning on Lake Wakatipu, waiting for the fog to lift and the light to reach over the mountain peaks felt like a winning bet.  The Willow Trees of Glenorchy stand audaciously, perching from their mounds, waiting for the morning light to give them the company of their shadows.  The pretty palate and softness created from a long exposure makes for a dreamy, yet bold capture.

With all of the “iconic” destinations of the Island, it was the in between where I found the most inspiration.  This classic capture immediately transcends you to another place.  The dreamy clouds gently float by as the mountain anchors the scene.  It feels at once familiar, intimate.  Like a recurring dream.  The clarity and detail of the mountain are accentuated in black and white.  The ridge stripped down to its essence, making it timeless.

The lighthouse at nugget point was built in 1870, originally fueled by oil.  Nugget Point was named by Captain Cook because the rocks surrounding the point looked like pieces of gold. We left St Clair at 3 am to drive to Nugget Point so that we could capture the stars before sunrise.  As it turned out it was a rainy morning which we spent waiting in the car for the weather to clear.  We had a brief moment to make the short hike down the trail to the lighthouse between the raindrops and this was the resulting capture.  The thick storm clouds remind us of the importance of lighthouses!

A road trip through New Zealand’s South Island in the Winter was a microcosm of diversity.  Within a couple of hours drive, you are standing alongside a glacier lake, at a sandy beach, or passing these incredible acres of green fields.  It seems implausible that this can all happen simultaneously on a relatively small island in the Pacific Ocean.  This was literally a “stop here” moment where I set up alongside the road to capture this peaceful scene.  There is an idyllic gentleness about the woven green layers.

A short drive from Queenstown, on New Zealand's South Island, Lake Hayes sits waiting to be explored.  This long exposure shot was captured at dusk in the falling winter's light.  You can see the headlamps from skiers on the mountains in the distance, the light traces their runs down the trails.  The details of the jetty and the overall tone of the image are very tranquil.  Jetties conjure up thoughts of journeys-those already taken and those to come. A gentle reminder that the greatest journey that any one of us will ever take, lies within.

The soft tones and stillness of this image draw you in and force you to listen.  The small reflecting pool glistens, beckoning you to give notice, to see.  Be still and listen.  Like a mystic’s crystal ball, the Moeraki Boulders are shrouded in mystery and local lore.  Koekohe Beach on the Otago coast of New Zealand’s South Island is home to these gigantic spherical boulders, the largest weighing in over 7 tons and measuring over six and a half feet across!

The foundation for this mountainside stone church in the Mackenzie region of New Zealand was laid in 1935.  With an active congregation, the Church of the Good Shepherd has been a witness to countless celebrations and ceremonies of all kinds.  Firmly planted on the shores of Lake Tekapo, this beautiful old stone church gives perspective to the expansive landscape.  Its simplicity exudes a quiet strength, standing mightily in the shadow of the snow-capped mountains. A memorial to the pioneers of the region.

This beautiful alpine lake runs along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin on the South Island of New Zealand and was formed by receding glaciers.  The pristine water, the purest on the planet, is truly this gorgeous turquoise color. It is created by glacial flour, the extremely finely ground rock particles from the glaciers and its ice cold, constant flow is an ideal environment for salmon. At the edge of the lake sits the Mount Cook Alpine Salmon shop, a great place to pause, turn your face to the sun, and take in the moment.

This morning on Lake Tekapo felt too good to be true.  With the sun rising, painting the sky these bright golden pinks, I took an iPhone shot so that I could have proof of how vibrant the colors were.  The pink refection off the windows of the Church of the Good Shepherd was icing on the cake.  This was one of those unexpected, epic moments.  After two early mornings of overcast, thick winter clouds, and a not so promising forecast, I almost bailed on this morning.  A reminder that persistence pays off and life is unpredictable by nature.

The lighthouse is an enduring symbol, a beacon to guide us in our time of need.  Serving as symbols of strength, solitude, permanence, constancy and romance.  An ever- present light, a ray of hope, which aids us during our darkest moments, standing tall against any storm.  This long exposure was captured after the clouds of a stormy morning broke, letting in a sliver of light.  You can smell the salty air and hear the shorebirds circling overhead.  More than just a pretty picture, “Sunrise Over Nugget Point” feels like an invitation to a safe harbor.  What better way to start a day?
